“I had difficulty finding coherence with this painting at first, but Copia developed in its own way. There is always a balance between where I want to go and where the painting wants to go.”

Light Becomes Wind

“Light Becomes Wind moves around two grounded areas: the ochre band on the left side and the blue form at the bottom, which gives the active area its freedom and supports it with shape and strong color. I try to stay sensitive to the balance between color and gesture, by giving color (light) a purpose and gesture (wind) a direction.”

Phoenix

“I titled this painting Phoenix because of the way the black figure ascends from the white arch below it. It was originally part of the ground, connected to the black area on the right. The painting started to work out when it separated from that space, becoming a unique form. The heavy green area is broken up by the white, gold, and blue areas, supporting the figure in its upward movement.”

Stack

“Creating this work felt like laboring over something. It was a heavy job in a way. Stack expresses itself with a series of marks applied with a stronger, less fluid arm movement. The forms kind of pile and collide on top of each other. Yet I couldn’t completely abandon a way through, which is created by the slightly transparent areas of the horizontal white strokes, and the left side where I left the canvas alone. I like this painting, because I learned that the work can endure through my searching and still be lifted and balanced past that moment I think it might all be over.”
